Newborn Must-Haves

It’s so hard knowing which newborn items you actually need. Everyone is so fast to give their advice on what items to buy and which to avoid. I’m the first to admit that I bought way too many things when I had my first baby, I barely used some of them. But as a mom of two, I feel like I’m much more in the know of what you newborn items you actually need.

Carter is now just over 3 months old, so he’s officially out of the newborn stage. I thought it would be the perfect time to put together a list of my newborn must-haves. We really couldn’t have gone without these in the first few months.

Baby Swing

This has got to be our most used and loved baby item. Which is why it’s at the top of my newborn must-haves list. You can finally do some things around the house whilst the baby is safely strapped in. We originally had a more expensive swing from a different brand, but he didn’t like it at all. We then tried the Joie Serina 2 in 1 Baby Swing at a friend’s house and he loved it. It can be plugged in or battery-operated, it swings forwards and rocks sideways and the chair vibrates as well. You can also take the chair off and take it with you on its own, it even has a vibrate function. Other functions include a reclining seat, music, and light. We actually got our second hand of facebook, as they can be a bit pricey. You can easily take the covers off and wash them.

You can get it here.

Chicco Next To Me

I wish I would have known about these 7 years ago when Miley was born. This is perfect if you like to cosleep with your baby or are breastfeeding. Itis much more spacious than a Moses basket, they should be able to fit in until they’re about 6 months old.

You can get it here.

The Cuddle Dry Towel

This has got to be the most useful baby towel there is. It’s a handsfree baby towel and it honestly made our life so much easier. Also, the baby loves it, he no longer screams the place down when we get him out of the bath. I absolutely love it and actually wonder how I did the first time around without it. It’s perfect as a gift for baby showers as well.

You can get it here.

Sleepyhead

Carter really loves the sleepyhead, it gives them a sense of comfort as they’re essentially lying in a baby nest. It’s perfect if you like the idea of a Moses basket but want them to be in it for longer. They fit in the snuz pod and next to me cribs. We’re thinking about getting the next size up for when he moves into his own bedroom.

You can get it here.

Muslins

I don’t think you can ever have enough muslins. Use them for wiping up baby sicks, as a blanket, breastfeeding cover-up or comforter. There are so many to choose from. Adan & Anais to some really nice ones and they are of better quality. But we also bought quite a few from Primark and they do trick as well.

You can get the Aden & Anais ones here.

A good changing bag was key for me. I’ve gone for the Zellie changing bag. It’s got so many pockets, space for everything and it just looks amazing. I can easily fit all of Carter’s things in the bag and extra items for the rest of the family.

You can find the bag here.

Breast Pump

I must have read so many reviews before I finally found the right electric breast pump. We couldn’t justify over £100 for an electric breast pump, so I was really pleased when I found this one for half the price. It had so many 5 star reviews on amazon.

Amazon doesn’t sell it anymore, but you can find it on eBay.

Steriliser

We love this steriliser, it’s not overly big and looks great in the kitchen. A space-saving steriliser was important for us, as we have always had limited countertop space so far. It fits any bottle and lots of other things. You can use both compartments together or just the top/bottom one. The white basket is also dishwasher safe, which will come in handy for when the weaning starts. Yes, it is rather pricey but we waited and bought it when it went on offer on Amazon.

You can get it here.

Baby Bottles

We tried a few different bottles with Carter, but being a breastfeed baby he proved to be very fussy. The only bottles he would go for are the NUK bottles with latex teats. They have a softer texture compared to all the silicone teats, but they need replacing more frequently. They do lots of different designs; blue/pink, star wars, toy story, and Disney. The latex teats can be bought separately as well.

You can get the bottles here and the teats here.

Pram

The pram is something we both took ages on deciding. We tried so many different ones out in the shops until we decided on the Quinny Moodd. We foolishly thought we didn’t need a big basket as we do most shops by car. Big mistake, especially when you already have one child. Also, the hood isn’t really made for the Scottish weather. Luckily, we bought it second hand so not too much is lost when we change it for a different one. We are actually looking to get the Joie Versatrax instead, as it ticks all of our boxes. What I’m trying to say is, that you really need to think of all features you might need of a pram. There isn’t one pram that’s for everyone. Go to shop, try them all out and I would definitely read all the reviews as well.

Car Seat

A good car seat is so important, please be sure to check the road safety crash test reports and if it’s compatible with your car. You can check on the manufacturer’s website if the car seat is compatible with your car. We’ve gone for a Cybex car set with an Isofix, as it makes life so much easier. We bought the first stage car seat second hand and are currently looking for deals on the next stage car seat.

This is the newer version of the one we have.

That’s my list of newborn must-haves. I would love to know what items are your favorites. And what are your newborn must-haves? Let me know if you like these types of lists and I will make more lists as he moves goes through the next stages.

Muslins have been a lifesaver for me, especially with my youngest two children. They each had muslins as their comforter (they loved flicking the tag) which meant they were easy to replace when they got dirty etc.

A great list of newborn must haves! I didn’t all have all of these when my son was younger but would definitely have bought them all if I had kids nowadays.

They really make it so much easier and you get more for your money. I have tall babies who outgrew a Moses basket so quickly.
